Episode 97

Tim Ballard, O.U.R. and White Mormon Nationalism

On this episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca and Landon joined by Dr. Matthew Harris as we delve into the world of Mormon nationalism and the legacy of Ezra Taft Benson. This topic is more relevant than ever as we seem to see a growing faction of Mormonism embracing white Christian nationalism.

In the mid-twentieth century, Ezra Taft Benson was a deeply controversial figure who served not only as Secretary of Agriculture under Dwight Eisenhower but also as a member the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. His ongoing battle to preach against communism and warn memebers that the United States was on the road to moral decay, put him at odds with many both politically and within the church.

The prophet and other members of the Quorum attempted to discipline Benson for allowing his political views to influence his religious leadership, but he continued to advocate for the John Birch Society and other radical causes, while promoting Christian nationalism.

Benson's legacy lives on today and even seems to be gaining momentum, as illustrated by the recent OUR and Tim Ballard information that has come to light. We know you'll be as fascinated as we were to dive into this very important topic.
